IMG Models is pleased to welcome China Machado to the family! At age 81, China has had an illustrious career. Born of Portuguese and Chinese descent, China got her first big break in Paris, when Givenchy asked her to join the company as their house model. Shortly thereafter, China left the fashion house to become a freelance model, and became celebrated as one of the highest-paid runway models of that era.
Machado made waves in the late 1950’s when she became muse to none other than photographer Richard Avedon. He shot her for Harper’s Bazaar in 1959, which made China the first non-Caucasian model ever to be in a major American magazine.
